Number plates go green for clean vehicles

The UK government has proposed for green licence plates to be introduced for Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs) to raise awareness and promote the use of low emission vehicles as part of their ‘Road to Zero Strategy’ where they aim to have at least 50% of new car sales to be ultra-low emission by 2030.

The difference in plates has already been adopted by other countries such as Canada and China in efforts to increase the purchases of electric cars.

Potential benefits for ZEV owners:

  • Access to bus or Low emission vehicle lanes

  • More electric charging bays

  • Ultra-low-emission-zones

  • Free or low charge parking

  • New houses having mandatory electric charging capabilities

The government is due to consult in order to gather views on whether the green license plates approach should be adopted and what the potential plates would look like.

The Low Emission Vehicles Expo at Energy and Rural Business Show will showcase opportunities in the transport sector and the impact of green vehicles on agricultural and rural businesses.
