Should you run a family attraction on your farm?

Samuel Harper, Owner, Nore Valley Park

At 15, Samuel came home to farm with his father. By the age of 20 he had his own flock of sheep while farming with his father in a mixed farming business. Samuel married at 27 to Isobel and they started farming on their own in 1980, mostly calf rearing. In 1989 they started tourism business and celebrated 30 years in 2019.

Maximising the value of your assets & resources through diversification

Barry Caslin, Energy and Rural Development Specialist, Teagasc

Barry Caslin is Teagasc - Energy and Rural Development Specialist. Prior to joining the specialist service Barry worked for eight years in the advisory service with Teagasc and prior to that worked with Glanbia in Germany in the meat industry. Barry works in the Teagasc Rural Economy Development Programme. He has authored numerous publications on energy use in agriculture including fact sheets, books and newspaper articles. He has organised seminars, workshops and conferences nationally including the annual Energy in Agriculture event organised with other collaborators including IFA, Tipperary Co Council, Tipp Energy Agency and Gurteen College. He is also a Rural Development specialist and coordinates the Teagasc Options programme which aim’s give individuals thinking of diversification a good understanding of how to turn an idea into a viable business. He has a hons degree in Agricultural Science from UCD and a Masters in Environmental Protection from Sligo IT.

Farm diversification by opening an on-farm brewery

David Walsh-KemmisFounder and Managing Director, Ballykilcavan Brewing Company

David left a career in IT in Dublin to take over Ballykilcavan Farm in 2004.  He ran a 180 hectare tillage unit for 12 years before deciding that the farm needed to be diversified to secure its future.  He and his wife opened their on-farm brewery in December 2018.

Wood as a resource - what are your options?

Vincent Nally, Chairman IFA Forestry Committee, Irish Farmer's Association (IFA)

Farming > 40yrs. Planted forestry on 4 occasions over past 25yrs. Runs store-to-beef system with bulls & bullocks & has farmed store lambs. Holds a level-8 BSc in Rural Development. Qualified to deliver chainsaw safety courses. Believes Forestry is going to be centre stage because of emissions, carbon credits & carbon trading. Sat on LEADER partnership in Westmeath for number of yrs.
